Why some UI patterns are learned quickly and others require repeated exposure

Learning a UI is governed by the same factors as learning anything: clear feedback, low stress, consistency, and connection to prior knowledge. Users learn UI patterns faster when actions have immediate, clear consequences; when patterns are consistent across the product; and when new patterns relate to familiar mental models. Anxiety impairs learning — complex, high-stakes interfaces are harder to learn than low-stakes ones with the same cognitive complexity.
