Color Memory and Recollection
Why remembered colors differ from seen colors, and what this means for design
Key Insight
Color memory is systematically inaccurate. When people recall a color from memory, they consistently remember it as more saturated and more typical of its category than it actually was. A remembered red is more vibrantly red than the original; a remembered blue sky is bluer. This has direct implications for brand color consistency: customers' mental model of a brand color may differ from the specification, yet the brand must still "feel right" to that mental model.
