Albers' transparence exercise demonstrates that the visual system infers depth and material from color relationships alone. When a color in an overlap region is the correct "mixture" of the two adjacent colors, the brain reads it as a transparent material. All colors can be opaque — no actual transparency is required. In UI design, this principle underlies depth perception, shadow rendering, and overlay effects.
