How sustained color exposure produces complementary color effects
Key Insight
After staring at a color, the visual system fatigues the receptors for that hue. When you look away, the fatigued receptors underfire — producing the complementary color as an after-image. The same mechanism operates continuously during sustained viewing: a red background shifts adjacent colors toward green; a blue background shifts adjacent colors toward orange. This is simultaneous contrast in its most dramatic form.
