Reading Is Unnatural
Why reading requires deliberate effort and how UI design can support or hinder it
Key Insight
Unlike spoken language — which the brain evolved to acquire naturally — reading is an artificial skill requiring explicit instruction and practice. Not all users read well. Even fluent readers don't read every word: they scan headings, skim patterns, and read only what appears relevant. UI text that assumes fluent, careful reading is designed for the exception, not the norm. Effective UI writing is scannable first, readable second.

Guidelines

- ✓Break long text into chunks with descriptive headings — users scan headings to decide what to read
- ✓Never put critical information only in the middle of a paragraph
- ✓Test comprehension: can a user answer a key question after 10 seconds on the page?
