Why users miss obvious things

Users frequently miss visible changes and obvious elements when their attention is focused elsewhere—a phenomenon covering both change blindness and inattentional blindness.

Guidelines

  • Place critical feedback (errors, confirmations) directly in the user's current focus area
  • Use animation or motion sparingly to draw attention to important changes
  • Don't assume users will notice changes in peripheral areas—make state changes obvious
  • Avoid relying solely on color changes to communicate status updates
  • Use inline validation rather than distant error summaries that users may not see
  • Design notifications to interrupt only when truly necessary—frequent interruptions train users to ignore them
