Iconography Grid & Style

Rules that keep an icon set visually consistent - grid, stroke, and corner treatment.

Platform: bothTags: icons, iconography, grid, brand, consistency

The Rule

All icons are drawn on a shared pixel grid (24×24 base) with a consistent 2px stroke, matching corner radius, and equal optical weight. Icons share one style (all outline OR all filled) - never mix within a context. Live area leaves a 2px keyline padding inside the bounding box.

Rationale

Icons read as a family only when they share construction rules. Inconsistent stroke weights or mixed outline/filled styles make an interface feel assembled from stock parts. A grid and stroke standard is design-system thinking applied to iconography.

Specifications

grid24×24px base grid (also 16 / 20 / 32 as scaled variants)
stroke2px stroke at 24px; scale proportionally at other sizes
keyline2px minimum padding between artwork and the bounding box
cornersConsistent corner radius across the set (e.g. 2px)

Examples

  • Good: one 24px outline set, 2px stroke, rounded joins used everywhere
  • Bad: mixing a 1.5px outline icon next to a filled 2px icon in the same toolbar
